Ziggurat PNP Assembly Guide

Overview

First and foremost, thanks for having a crack at assembling the Ziggurat. Its a fair bit of work (~200 cards) but I hope you will find the game most rewarding.

All the PNP assets you need are available here:

You can either save or the files locally as a zip by clicking download, or if you are a drop box user copy the files to your local dropbox environment.

Note, you do not require any of the files in ./archive' or ./tts-mod`. These are provided as a convenience for returning users or TTS mode developers.

Rule Book

A rule book is provided as part of the PNP distribution for convenience. But i think you would be better off referring and printing from the living document at:

Note, this is always going to be the most up to date set of rules available. I will generate a PDF of the rules at specific milestones and add to the PNP distribution.

Map Tiles (20230621-map-tiles.pdf)

There are 20 map tiles in total. They are in the “Flower Hex Mat” format and have no back. There are 20 that are used in total. You do no longer require the 0: Test Tile or 66: Great Stairway – these are not used and will be removed.

Note, these can be a little fiddly. Recommend chopping them up into squares and then clip the edges with scissors or a knife.

Player Aids

8 Tarot sized cards. Four cards are essential components for tracking various status for the Hero; health/grit, Initiative, Combat, and turn progress. The other four are rules summaries.

Once you get the hang of the mechanisms these rule summaries are designed to save you looking up the rule book.

Loot Deck

Straight forward deck of 27 Poker Cards. While the backs appear to be identical, they actually have an alternating Loot Icon (sun/pentagram) which is used when equipping Denizens in the game.

Note, deck order is unimportant. These cards are always shuffled prior to any game session.

True Names

Straight forward deck of 9 Poker Cards.

Note, deck order is unimportant. These cards are always shuffled prior to any game session.

Denizen Faction Decks

All the denizens of the Ziggurat are provided in a single file. These should be printed and assembled into 6 faction decks of 9 Poker cards each; Jungle, Ziggurat, Caves, Cultist, Crypts and Companions. Any left over cards are assets for quests; ie denizens that are specific to certain quest decks. These should be set aside and incorporated into the relevant quest deck, see below.

Note, deck order is unimportant. These cards are always shuffled prior to any game session.

Location Encounters

A deck of 40 location encounter cards. Each card clearly indicates the number of the location it is assigned to. These should be kept in strictly numeric order, so they can be easily referenced during the game. That is, when you are asked to draw a location encounter you will need look up a card that matches the number of the map tile you are exploring. The order of cards with the same number is not important.

Heroes & Accoutrements

There are three separate printables for Heroes; Hero avatars, weapons and gear. The gear cards are a combination of gear, virtuosities and familiars. It is recommended to assemble these cards and keep them altogether in a single deck.

Note, when you start a game session, you will select a single hero, a single weapon, a single gear item and either a virtuosity or familiar. All other cards in this deck will be set aside for the game session.

Quest Decks

Every game session involves selecting and completing a quest. There is only a single quest currently available in the PNP (more to come).

Each Quest is comprised of 4 parts:

  • Quest Deck
  • Threat Deck
  • Set Aside Cards
  • Peril Deck

Quest Deck

The Quest deck comprises of 2-5 cards. Each card will have an identifying “quest icon” that distinguishes it from other quests (note there is only one quest at the moment). Next to the icon is a sequence number, and the quest deck should be assembled in sequence.

Threat Deck

The Threat deck comprises of 1-3 cards. Each card will have an identifying “quest icon” that distinguishes it from other quests (note there is only one quest at the moment) and a skull icon designating it as part of the Threat deck. Next to the icon is a sequence number, and the threat deck should be assembled in sequence.

Set Aside Cards

Some Quests come with special cards that are unique to the Quest. These are set aside next to the Quest deck and called upon as needed. The PNP distribution has a single Quest (at the moment) that includes three set aside cards; the muscle mechanic, flesh carver and Xantheia the Sybilline. All three come from the Denizen PNP file.

Peril Deck

All Peril cards have the same back. The Peril deck is assembled for each specific quest. The Quest will typically come with 9 Peril cards, and these are combined with the 6 core Peril encounter cards present in all Peril decks (labelled as Standard). This forms a typical Peril deck of 15 cards for any game session.

Additional Components

Tokens

Ziggurat uses several different tokens for tracking combat status, conditions and various aspects of the game session. You can use the provided token sheet or any suitable substitute.

Note, probably easiest to print the Combat Status (red) and Condition (blue) tokens as these are relatively specific. The Peril, Explore and Barrier tokens could be substituted for any suitable identifying token.

Dice and Trackers

You will require a D6 and 2D8 for the basic skill check mechanic. Alternative a digital die roller which gives a similar dice rolling result.

4 cubes for use with the Health (HP) and Grit trackers is required.

A simple Meeple or miniature for tracking the location of the Hero on the game board.

A collection of health trackers for the denizens in your party or enemies you are fighting. I use simple D6 but any health tracking token would suffice.

That’s it! Please feel free to raise any questions you may have here or on the BGG WIP thread
